Silver Linings Playbook
I finished the first 20% of Silver Linings Playbook. I'm finding it to be a fast read. Maybe if the Connecticut shootings hadn't just happened, I would be reading it differently, but so far, I'm a little afraid of the main character, and I keep wondering if he and Nikki are really having "away time" or if something bad happened to Nikki. Hopefully she just moved on. Where do others think Nikki has gone?

I am not quite all the way at 20% but am far enough to agree with what you're saying. The main guy is a bit disturbing in the way he thinks about things and people, and Nikki's situation isn't entirely clear. I've been wondering if something happened and he's in denial, which is why he's in treatment. It feels kinda ominous right now, in some ways.
ReplyDeleteI'm finished! I liked it! I had a lot of real worries through a lot of the read, but in the end... Well, I liked it. Trying to follow the no spoilers rule. Don't want to be droppin' forbidden knowledge! Hehe
ReplyDeleteI'm not finished with the book, but to comment on the above I have to say I feel that when his wife asked for a separation, He became obsessed with getting her back, causing him to go a little bit crazy. I think he's so madly in love with her that he can't see reality anymore. His dad seems to have his own issues as well. And mom/wife is the enabler.
ReplyDeleteI'm at 80 percent. I've been there for a while because I hit such a cheesy, predictable point, I wasn't sure I could continue. I do absolutely love the Kenny G hallucinations - for some reason, I laugh uncontrollably when they happen. The writer does an excellent job of balancing terror and humor in those parts, and I'm wondering if they'll get the real Kenny G for the movie. Ha! I hope to finish tonight.

ReplyDeleteI'm trying to remember back at what point I thought there was something predictable; there is one part in particular, but I won't say until I know more of where you're at, Tanya. I'm curious to discuss this one a little bit when we're done.
ReplyDeleteI finished the book. Perhaps to my surprise, I also liked it. I found that I didn't like any of the characters until I was very close to done. They were all pathetic in their own special ways. Then, one part (won't say which part yet so I don't ruin it), totally shifted my perspective. I ended up liking every character. While I did find much of the story predictable, I did not in any way expect to change my mind, or judgments, about every single person in the story. How fun! I look forward to discussing it out loud.
